What to pack

Getting organized for Teacher Training in India and wondering what to pack?

If you are wishing to pack light or you
can only bring carry on due to expensive check in baggage charges
the best reference is David Swenson’s Ashtanga Vinyasa manual, available on Amazon. Also please download or print the PDF training modules.

There are only several yoga mats at the shala
Please bring your own and a yoga towel if you have issues with borrowing worn mats. There are places to purchase yoga mats nearby too.

It can be hot during the day but sometimes at night it can get chilly. So, it might be nice to have a small blanket/sarong

SIM cards may be purchased inside the airport.
Or, perhaps buy some minutes online for Google Talk.
There is free Wifi at the student accommodations however on some days it’s a weak signal

Important Documents- Passport, Indian Visitor Visa (or printed E Tourist Visa+passport picture for customs), Air Tickets, travel insurance, our yoga shala contact address/phone#

Our mobile# and shala/apartment address for emergencies/customs, Money in USD and Rupees for additional expenses ( $150-300 USD is probably more than enough for 15 days)

credit cards/ international ATM cards( Remember to call your bank to tell them you are traveling to India or account may be blocked), photo copies of passport/flight info

Rupees for your private driver  or shared between car pooling students.

It will more than likely be hot. Pack light… bring light travel clothing, flip flops, sneakers, yoga clothes, rain jacket, sun glasses, hat, bandana, light cover up/scarf to cover up skin in temples and while going out.

Processed with VSCO with dog3 presetFor the afternoon Ayurveda Massage Classes it is highly recommended to bring a medium-large sarong or/& towel to cover up and / or to lie down on. There are also places to purchase sarongs nearby. For massage class please wear your 2-piece swim suit or shorts and bikini top and/or yoga bra top under your clothes before each massage class. Please be changed and be ready for the massage lessons during the lunch hour break to be on time for class. We have a lot to learn…45+ massage techniques to cover in only 8 days and time is of essence. Thank you 🙂

For yoga asana practice the usual yoga wear is fine such as tank tops, leggings or sports shorts.

Please respect the culture when going out and wear a shawl, and please cover up shoulders, legs when entering temples especially in Mysore. For Goa, it is more casual dress.

Power outages are common in southern India. Bring a mini flashlight, water bottle, travel mug

Towel or sarong

Toiletries: sun screen, face wash, vinegar and / or baking soda (makes for excellent dry shampoo, cleans clothing, general cleaner, ants and cockroaches dislike them too 😉

Misc: swiss army knife, key&lock, moneybelt, needed medicines, treatment for diarrhea, sore stomach and headaches

Good writing supplies, lots of pens, notebooks, a big folder to put handouts in, have enough memory and charged battery for your devices to record audio and video.

Bring smart phone to take pictures, laptop, camera, phone charger, international adaptor, extension cord

Ear plugs, face mask, eye mask

Bring a few initial travel snacks and needed dietary nourishment for the first days before you can get to the grocery store

Bring your sense of fun, adventure, a smile and humor- for everything from haggling with the rickshaw or battling queues, to discovering true Indian friendliness and genuine hospitality.
